In Morningstar's "Fund Spy" column, senior fund analyst Andrew Gogerty announces six funds with the potential to win the award for Morningstar Domestic-Stock Manager of the Year. In the article, titled, "Six Early Contenders for Domestic-Stock Manager of the Year," Gogerty writes, "Brewer and team are benefiting from both stock selection and portfolio positioning, as many of the fund's top holdings have been home runs so far this year...Brewer's experience in micro-caps--a key driver of returns here--furthers its long-term appeal"

The Wall Street Journal - 5/13/2009
In an article by Sam Mamudi titled, “After 2008 Pain, Some Funds Revive; Worst-Hit Portfolios' Bets Pay Off," William Blair Small Cap Growth Fund is highlighted as the top-performing growth fund this year and Portfolio Managers Mike Balkin and Karl Brewer were cited for their management. In the article, Mamudi writes that Morningstar Analyst Greg Brown gives particular credit to the William Blair Fund's managers for sticking with their approach even in a terrible market. "Investors emotions are so fickle, and to have that manager's state of mind [and buy stocks at the bottom], it's incredible," he said.

Investing in smaller companies involves special risks, including higher volatility and lower liquidity.

The Small Cap Growth Fund's performance during 2000 was primarily attributable to investments in initial public offerings (IPOs) during a rising market. Since then, IPOs have had an insignificant effect on the Fund's performance. As the Fund grows, the impact of IPOs is likely to diminish.
