Michael Balkin

Portfolio Manager on the Small Cap Growth team. He rejoined William Blair in 2008 after three years as a Portfolio Manager and Chief Investment Officer of Magnetar Investment Management. Mike originally joined the William Blair Small Cap Growth team as a Portfolio Manager in late 1999. Prior to that, he worked in William Blair’s sell-side institutional research sales group, specializing in small cap growth companies. Michael originally joined the firm in 1990.

Ward Sexton, CFA

Portfolio Manager on the Small Cap Growth team and a Research Analyst focused on U.S. small and mid cap Resources stocks. Previously, he was an Associate Portfolio Manager on the Small Cap Growth strategy and a Research Analyst. He joined the team in 2001 and has previously covered the Financials and Consumer sectors in addition to Energy and Materials. He joined William Blair & Company in 1999 and worked in the firm’s corporate finance group for two years. Ward is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Chicago. 

Education: B.S., Finance with honors, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; M.B.A., high honors, University of Chicago Booth School of Business

Mark Thompson, CFA

Portfolio Manager on the Small Cap Growth team. Previously, he was a research analyst and an associate portfolio manager on William Blair's Small Cap Growth strategy. In Mark's research role, he focused on U.S. small-cap stocks across sectors. Before joining the firm as a research analyst in 2006, he was a research generalist at Kidron Capital for three years. Before that, he was a research analyst covering healthcare at American Express for two years. Mark is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society Chicago.

Education: B.B.A. and M.B.A., University of Iowa.
